Ironwood — The Ironwood Board of Education approved its budget for the 2022-2023 school year at their regular meeting on Monday. The board also completed their first reading of policy updates from the Michigan Association of School Boards and the educational consulting firm Neola.
Carolyn Mieloszyk, the district’s administrative assistant and school board secretary, said that the recommended changes were not substantial. According to a policy overview from Neola, the changes include the addition of new and revised policies on enforcing staff dress and grooming in a nondiscriminatory manner. It also has revised policies on grant funds, spending federal funds and federal grants/funds, all including changes to the Education Department General Administrative Regulations
Mieloszyk said that the board will discuss and consider approving these changes at their next regular meeting on July 18. She said that the board may also reject these changes or institute new policies of their own, although this is unusual.
The board approved the personnel report, which included the creation of a new custodian position for Sara Kauppi, with Stephanie Berry replacing Kauppi as food service cook. The report also included the hiring of Candee Wiermeri, John Lorenson, Jason Saari and Samuel Gresham as summer custodians, and Brian Nowicki and Sydnee Lorenson as summer paraprofessionals for this summer.
After going into executive session to discuss negotiations, the board reconvened and approved their contracts with the Ironwood Education Association, the Gogebic County Community Schools Education Association, the Ironwood Education Support Personnel Association, school administrators and administrative assistant.
The board also:
—Authorized Superintendent Travis Powell to call for bids on milk and bread for the school lunch program for the 2022-2023 school year.
—Acknowledged the class of 1989’s donation of books to third grade teacher Mary Sommer’s classroom, Mark Sutter’s donation of hats, gloves and shoes and Mary Sue Anderson’s donation of $1,000.
