HURLEY, Wis. — Lena A. Camponeschi, 104, of Hurley, passed away peacefully at Westgate Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Ironwood, Michigan, on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022.
Lena was born the daughter of Joseph and Domenica (Novascone) Negri on April 1, 1918, in Gile. She attended grade school in Gile and Montreal. Lena was a 1935 graduate of Lincoln High School in Hurley. Lena was employed throughout the years at Mary’s Eat Shop in Ironwood, Shorty Johnson Bus Station in Ironwood, Dr. D.J. Martenelli’s office in Hurley as a receptionist, Piasani Company in Ironwood for 24 years until her retirement in 1998, and then Lena worked for Mrs. Augustine’s Catering.
On Aug. 17, 1945, Lena was united in marriage with Hugo J. Camponeschi at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by the late Fr. Peter Meyers.
Lena was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley, where she also served on the Women’s Council. Lena was a Hurley Homemaker and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her son, Joseph M. Camponeschi of Hurley; daughter, Mary Ann Camponeschi of Hurley; granddaughter, Alicia (Mike) Graham of Ironwood; and great-grandson, Chase Graham. Lena is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hugo in 1979; brothers, Dominic Negri, Lawrence (Mary) Negri and Joseph (Scheryl) Negri; sisters, Frances Cooksey, Mary (Steve) Packmayer and Minnie (Andrew) Rodeghiero; brothers-in-law, John, Savino and Paul (Mayme) Camponeschi; and sisters-in-law, Eleanor Pudas, Carmela (Glen) Anderson and Theresa (Paul) Henning.
Visitation for Lena will take place from 10 a.m. to the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley on Friday, Dec. 30. Burial will take place in spring 2023 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hurley.
