William J. Mattson

IRON BELT, Wis. - William J. Mattson, 75, of Iron Belt, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, at his home.

William was born on April 8, 1947, in Iron Belt, the Son of Eino and Dolores (Baross) Mattson.

William proudly served in the U.S. Army with two tours in Vietnam. He was on active duty for eight years and then served 12 years in the Army National Guard while also working in the Mellen Mill for Louisiana Pacific. He also drove a semi-truck for 20 years before his retirement.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family, and time at the Kokely Camp playing Smear and the Chavers Camp annual local bird tournament. He had a passion for vintage vehicles and enjoyed going to the local car shows. He also liked going four-wheeling and spending time with his friends in the local restaurants and taverns. You could find him weekly, watching Wheel of Fortune at The Hideaway in Iron Belt with Justin, Jess and Tom.

He was preceded in passing by his father, Eino Mattson; two sisters, Bonnie Misuraco and Darlene Kokely; a brother, Donald "Muttie" Mattson; two sons, William "Billy" Mattson and Bradley James "BJ" Mattson; and a grandson, Spencer Robinson.

He is survived by his mother, Dolores Mattson; his son, Jeff Mills of Hatley; his brother, Robert (Donna) Mattson of Ironwood, Michigan; his two sisters, JoAnn Walta of Nekoosa, and Brenda Maki (Chuck) of Wisconsin Rapids; his grandchildren, Jessica Mills of Neenah, Mariah MacLeod of Wausau, Ava Such of North Dakota and Liam Vukusich of Bessemer, Michigan; and his great-grandchildren, Elsie Mae and KJ Murphy.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 8, at noon at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home in Ironwood, with visitation at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at The Hideaway in Iron Belt following the service.
