Florence 'Flossy' Korpela

HURLEY, Wis. - With great sadness in our hearts, we announce the death of Florence "Flossy" Korpela, of Hurley. She passed away with her niece, Margaret (Lanny) and her granddaughter, Amber by her side on Feb. 14, 2023.

She was born on Sept. 13, 1929, in South Carey, Hurley, the first-born daughter of the late Sulo and Martha (Mattson) Kangas. Florence attended the South Carey grade school and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1947.

On Oct. 8, 1955, Florence married Emil Korpela at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Michigan, with the Rev. A. L. Maki officiating. The couple resided in Montreal, Wisconsin, until 1960, before moving to Hurley.

For the past four-plus years, Florence has been a resident of the Villa Maria Nursing Home. Florence enjoyed her time at the Villa playing bingo and other activities. She would spend hours doing word find puzzles. We are thankful for the excellent care given by the entire staff at the Villa Maria Nursing Home.

Florence is survived by her son, John of Hurley; grandchildren, Matthew Korpela, Nichole (Wes) Nasi, Sabrina Nelmark, and Amber (Adam) Guglielmotto and their son, Gage; sister, Arlene Telford of Milwaukee; special niece, Margaret (Lanny) Peterson; as well as many numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emil in 2007; son, David in 1996; and two sisters, Anna Gertz and Lenore Rogo.

A graveside service will take place in the spring.
