Ironwood — The Gogebic-Iron County Airport Board held a special meeting on Monday afternoon to finalize its recommendation for the Essential Air Service for their airport.

The board voted unanimously to recommend that Denver Air continue to act as its airline.

Board member Jim Lorensen made the motion to approve Denver Air as their recommended carrier, saying: “For the following reasons: they are a 121 service airline, they have proven the timeliness and completion of flight, have proven their customer service, their succession growing passenger rates, and their positive collaboration with the TSA and airport admin to improve airport services and airport operations.”

Additionally, the board discussed and approved a contract regarding the required repainting of the runway, something that is done every couple of years.

“It is impressive if we get the paint to last two years,” said interim manager Todd Richter. He explained that due to the conditions that the runway is put under, between plowing and running planes, that it wears down and needs to be repainted on occasion.

The board recommended that this contract be signed.

In addition the board discussed the progress on constructing a garage for storage of equipment for Denver Air. The board recommended that they begin to seek proposals for the garage project to get an idea of how much construction costs and material costs would be.
