Savina J. Kyrola

BESSEMER, Mich. — Savina J. Kyrola, 96, of 1 N. Fairview Street Apartments, Bessemer, died on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at her residence.

Savina was born on April 12, 1927, in Anvil Location, Bessemer, a daughter of Massimo and Mamie (Borgo) Mattie. She attended Anvil School and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer in 1944.

Savina attended beauty school and worked locally for 20 years. Then, she was employed as a dietary aide at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield for 17 years.

On May 15, 1948, Savina was united in marriage to Toivo W. “Cuddy” Kyrola at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wakefield.

Savina was a faithful member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. She was a supporting member of the Daughters of Isabella, volunteered countless hours at St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bessemer and for many years helped with the pasty fundraiser at St. Sebastian until 2022.

Savina is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Mark) Wiita, St. Petersburg, Florida, and Kathy (Stacy) Caudell, Hendersonville, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Julie (Keith) Kurutz; Dripping Springs, Texas; a great-granddaughter, Elle, Dripping Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Toivo, on Dec. 4, 2010; a sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and Joe Bravatto Sr., a brother, James Mattie; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eric and Ruth Kettula.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

The family is honoring her life in a private Mass of Christian Burial at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. The Rev. Dominic Agyapong will be the celebrant.

Rite of Committal and interment will take place at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.
