Bessemer — At a Tuesday evening meeting of the Bessemer Planning Commission, City Manager Christopher Frazer reported that the city soon will schedule a joint meeting of all boards and commissions.

The annual tradition has occurred in the past several years as a means for members of the various entities to stay informed of each other’s progress and plans and to discuss mutual interests.

“I want to have as many people at this meeting as possible,” said Frazer.

He said he was in the process of gathering times that members of each board or commission might be available to participate in the meeting, which generally has devoted part of the session to a brainstorming period among each group of attendees, after which objectives are shared with the entire group.

Commissioners voted to recommend to the council a Tuesday or Wednesday evening meeting time.

In other news, commissioners also:

—Approved the Planning Commission report of activity for 2023. The city manager, who prepared the report, said little action had occurred due to turnover in city staff and a frequent lack of quorum among commissioners.

—Voted to receive and file the city’s capital improvement plan for 2023-2024. Frazer asked whether commissioners had any recommendations for the council, but Planning Commission chairman George Beninghaus said that the commission does not deal with any revenue issues.

—Within the 2024 meeting schedule for the Planning Commission, voted to change the regularly scheduled Nov. 5 meeting to Nov. 6 in order to avoid a conflict with election day.

All votes were unanimous with Richard Babbitt and Judy Palmateer absent.

The Planning Commission’s next regular meeting will be on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers of the Bessemer City Hall.
