Barbara Jean Maki

IRONWOOD, Mich. – Barbara Jean Maki, 80, a longtime resident of Ironwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024, at her home.

Barbara was born on Sept. 28, 1943, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late Conrad and Edith (Berg) Swanson. She attended Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood and graduated in 1961.

Barbara had a vivid personality, best described as a blend of wit, stubbornness, humor and care. Among her noteworthy traits were her brilliant cooking skills and a knack for crafts that she often used to bring warmth and affection into our lives.

She shared decades of memories of travel and adventures with the love of her life, with very few days spent apart.

Barbara was a warrior, fighting and conquering stage 4 cancer, along with navigating the struggles of ALS with strength and grace.

Mourning her loss are her loving husband of 63 years, Carl; her sons, David (Jill) and Jim (Mary Jo); her treasured grandchildren, Dan (Kady), Andy, Zach (Brook), Alyssa and Matt (Stephanie); and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Hayden, Abigail, Lillian and Lena.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank their Pastor Rick Williams and his wife, June, the entire Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Hospice nurses and volunteers, and all of their friends and family for their love and support during this difficult time.

Jerald Rocco, owner and manager of Lakeside Memorial Chapel Inc., in Wakefield, is assisting the family with arrangements. To send online condolences or to share a memory, please go to lakesidememorialchapel.com.
