Ironwood — The Globe’s editorial and advertising staffs were recently honored with awards from the Michigan Press Association and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.

Sports Editor Jason Juno earned awards for both news and sports writing, as well as sports photography.

A story Juno wrote about a successful effort to find a missing boy in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park on May 11, 2023, earned first place in the MPA’s Spot News Story category. Entitled “Safe and Sound,” the same story took second place in the WNA’s Breaking News category.

The judge in WNA competition said the article was a “well-written, gripping, ‘real people’ story. The quotes, the descriptions, the details — solid.”

Juno also took second place in the MPA’s Sport Writing competition with a story about former Ewen-Trout Creek standout’s Jake Witt’s effort to make a spot on the Indianapolis Colts, published the same day, May 11, 2023. The story was titled “Now the work begins.”

Two of Juno’s sports photos that ran on March 8, 2023, won places in the Sports Photo category. A photo of the Ewen-Trout Creek girls basketball team celebrating its district championship earned first place, while an action photo from the Panthers’ regional semifinal lost four days later, but reported in the same weekly edition, earned third place.

Globe news reporter P.J. Glisson earned honorable mention for an April 20, 2023, front page story entitled “Seasons Collide: Spring blizzard combines with flooding on Gogebic Range.”

The the Business section of the 2023 Progress Edition, published March 23, also won an honorable mention in the WNA competition for Best Special Section.

The Globe’s advertising department won four places and four honorable mentions across both state contests.

An ad for Wolverine Trails won awards in both contests, taking second place for Best Small Ad in the WNA contest, and third place in the MPA’s Best Health/Fitness Ad category.

An ad for Ashland Ford took second place in the MPA’s New and Used Auto category, while a C&M Oil ad took third place for Best Use of Humor in the WNA contest.

Honorable mentions went to Hitt’s Fine Furniture and Remax Action North ads in the MPA contest, and Suffolk Street Eatery and the Globe’s Bingo promotion from the WNA.

The two newspaper groups announced the honors at awards banquets held recently.

Judges for the MPA contest were from the Pennsylvania Press Association. Entries were from work published between Aug. 1, 2022 and July 31, 2023.
