The sky turned red in the east on Tuesday morning in Hurley as the sun rose on a day that weather forecasters had posted a winter storm warning for the region with upwards of a foot of heavy, wet snow predicted. While the 2023-2024 seasonal snow was slow to come with just 40.6 inches measured at the National Weather Service station at the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Facility in Ironwood through February, March alone saw more than half as much snow - 21.6 inches. Including 0.5 inches of snow in the 24-hour period ending at 7 a.m. Wednesday, the region sits at 62.7 inches of snow for the season, well behind the average for the date of 173.0 inches.
