10 miles of new trail opens in Ironwood

IRONWOOD - A crowd of excited bikers gathered for a ribbon cutting at the Bonnie Street Trailhead, on Friday afternoon, to celebrate the grand opening of 10 miles of singletrack mountain bike trails being added to the Miners Memorial Heritage Park.

The ceremony was kept short and sweet, as community members were eager to get out and explore the new trails, with members from Sisu Dirt Crew including president Dustin Filippini, and vice president Brad Kusz speaking about how excited they were to see the trails finally open.

The event included speeches from Tom Bergman, of Ironwood Community Development, and Tarun Patel, treasurer of the Ironwood Tourism Council, as well as from John Pepin from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park were also present with a booth hosting information about the trail system and park as a while.

The trail was funded partly by a $280000 grant from the MDNR. To supplement this, the Ironwood Tourism Council donated $66,000, the Sisu Dirt Crew added $40,000 and the city contributed $14,000.
