Ironwood - At a Monday meeting of the Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education, members discussed the bus garage project and pitched some ideas for the future.

"We have been working for the last couple of months on updating the bus garage," said Superintendent Travis Powell, "and we noticed that the main door would need some attention."

Powell said that bus bay doors need to be changed into double doors, so that they fully close and allow clear access to two bays for parking.

The board voted unanimously to include the updates in related bids, in order to ascertain the full project cost.

The board also approved a plan for the collection of summer taxes by municipalities. "There was a request to get this information to the municipalities as soon as possible," said Powell.

In addition, the board offered thanks to the public for the passing of the school's operating millage at the May special election.

The board briefly discussed the possibility of a listening session, so as to get community input from the public regarding planning for the next five years. The board did not vote on the matter but agreed that it would be a fantastic idea for this to occur after a new superintendent is hired.

In other news, the board:

- Approved a football sound system project as presented.

- Heard updates from staff, including K-12 Principal Melissa Nigh, who said that all is well: "Everyone is kind of just hanging on for the last few weeks of classes," she said.

- Heard a presentation of student-of-the-month awards.

- Heard and approved a list of new hires, including a K-12 physical education instructor, a long-term sub for the secondary math teacher for alternative education, a third grade substitute, a first-floor custodian, and a long-term sub for first grade.

- Heard a list of retiring personnel.

- Approved the attendance and enrollment reports.

The Luther L. Wright High School graduation ceremony will be on Friday at 6 p.m. in the school gym.

The board normally meets on the fourth Monday of the month, but that date was rescheduled this month due to the Memorial Day holiday.
