GILE, Wis. – Jon Axel Bergquist, 85, of Gile, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Iron River Care Center in Iron River, Michigan.
Jon, a son of George and Gertrude (Trier) Bergquist, was born April 21, 1939, in Ironwood.
On Sept. 7, 1964, he was united in marriage to Roberta (Bobbie) Peterson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. She preceded him in death Sept. 5, 2022.
Jon is survived by his sons, Scott and Cory; his grandchildren, Breanna and Brenden; his brothers, Nik (Judy) and George; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Judy, Sonia and Carole Bergquist, Shirley and Roger Selves, Gloria Johnson and Dan Niemi; and many loving nephews, nieces and cousins.
Besides his wife and parents, Jon was preceded in death by his son, J.R .; his brothers, Robert, Chris, Karl and G.I .; his sister, Merrie G. Giannunzio; his sisters-in-law, Joann Bergquist and Karen Niemi; and his brother-in-law, Roy Johnson.
Jon proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957 – 1960. Working with his wife and sons, they owned and operated Hiawatha Vending, serving the entire upper peninsula and northern Wisconsin.
Jon was an active member of the GIFA Association, the Paavo Nurmi spaghetti feed, the GIFA smear league and the Jaycees. For many years, he was an active bowler in the area, even appearing on T.V. Jon loved fishing on the Gile Flowage with his buddy, Rick Ecklund.
He loved his family, the area he lived in and the people he volunteered with and met along the way.
His sons would like to thank the staff at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital and the Iron River Care Center for the compassionate care given to Jon in his final years.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 12:30 p.m., at St. Mary's Cemetery in Hurley, with Fr. Raj officiating.
