Elaine M. Nessmith

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. - Elaine M. Nessmith, 79, of Altenburg, Missouri, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at Ste. Genevieve Care Center in Ste. Genevieve.

She was born Feb. 27, 1945, in Watersmeet, Michigan.

Elaine is survived by her three daughters, Julie Voelker of Saint Mary, Caryn (Jerry) Kambitsis of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, and Laurie (Rod) Greenfield of Stevensville, Maryland; son, Eric (Amy) Christiansen of Aurora, Illinois; sister, Sherry Timan of Hurley, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Vincent, Nikolas and Emily Kambitsis, Bennett, Lindsay and Grant Christiansen, and Matthew and Tori Fedora; great-grandchildren, Trey and Trystan Helm, and soon-to-be-born Lilah Keesee.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Jefferson Nessmith; father, Gust Timan; and mother, Helen (Pelto) Timan.

Elaine was raised in rural Ironwood Township, in the Northwoods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where her lifelong love of nature and animals was nurtured. The simple pleasures of observing the beauty of the Northwoods; searching for agates on the beaches of Lake Superior; and appreciating the quiet solitude of a deep, snowy winter day with a good book and a cup of coffee by the wood stove were some of her favorite memories.

Elaine spent her young adult years in suburban Chicago, where she raised her four children, volunteered with both Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, taught Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church in Glen Ellyn, and was involved in the PTA. Elaine made her home in Altenburg after her retirement, where she continued her enjoyment of rural life and the natural beauty of East Perry County.

The family is planning a gathering in her honor at Lake Superior in Ironwood, Michigan, at a later date.

Special thanks to the wonderful nurses, CNAs, med techs and staff at the Sainte Genevieve Care Center in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, along with the wonderful nurses of Crown Hospice in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Your kind and compassionate care of our mother will never be forgotten.
