AFTER EXTENSIVE renovations, the 1915 Erwin East End School now serves as the Erwin Township Historical Society's museum, with the entrance beckoning here on Sept. 11. On Sept. 26, at its annual conference and awards banquet in Alpena, the Historical Society of Michigan will present the museum with a State History Award in the Local Societies category. ERWIN TOWNSHIP - "Field of Dreams" isn't just the title of a movie. It also describes nine acres of soft grass, surrounded by forest, at 8970 Van Buskirk Road in Erwin Township.
The Erwin Township Historical Society bought the land in 2020 as the future site of its museum, moving the township's 1915 one-room schoolhouse to the property in 2021.
As volunteers began the painstaking work of restoring the building, they also saw the potential of that wide, green field.
