THE GILE FLOWAGE lies low on Oct. 7 when this photo was taken. The view from U.S. 51, just south of Hurley, is startlingly different than in years past, with this side of the flowage unusually dry. Northern Wisconsin is experiencing extreme drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor map released Oct. 8, with Iron County in exceptional drought, the most severe of the map's categories. All of Michigan's U.P. is also suffering drought conditions, with the intensity in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties ranging from moderate to extreme.
