Bewley vs. Deutch, Meyers vs. Francis will headline local November ballot

Party battles came to a head during the primary election across Wisconsin on Tuesday.

Votes during the election were cast along party lines, and in Iron County, more people voted on the Democratic ballot than the Republican one.

In local races, incumbents Sheriff Tony Furyk (410 votes), coroner Diane Simonich (422 votes) and clerk of circuit court Karen Ransanici (433), all ran unopposed as Democrats.

Janet Bewley, of Ashland, Wis., won the Democratic nomination for the District 25 state senate seat. She received 71 percent of the vote in a three-way contest across the district, according to the Associated Press. In Iron County, Bewley grabbed 331 votes, to 91 for Thomas Ratzlaff and 32 for Gary Kauther. Republican Dane Deutsch ran unopposed for his party's nomination and received 218 total votes in Iron County. Bewley and Deutsch will face off during the general election on Nov. 4.

In the Democratic primary for the District 74 state assembly seat, Beth Meyers beat Graham Garfield, 56-44 percent. In Iron County, Meyers also won 269-176. Jamey Francis, of Hurley, ran unopposed on the Republican ticket, receiving 236 votes in Iron County. Francis will face Meyers in November.

At the congressional level, both Democrats and Republicans had challengers, with incumbent U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, a Republican, defeating Don Raihala 88-12 percent across the district and 216-39 in Iron County. On the Democratic side, Kelly Westlund, of Ashland, Wis., defeated Mike Krsiean 77-23 percent districtwide and 300-108 in Iron County. Duffy will face Westlund in the general election.

At the statewide level, Democrats Mary Burke and Brett Hulsey faced off to be on the ballot for governor in November. Burke received 84 percent of the vote across the state, and will face incumbent Republican Gov. Scott Walker in the general election. Burke defeated Hulsey 378-76 in Iron County. Walker ran unopposed on the Republican ticket and received 268 votes in Iron County.

For lieutenant governor, incumbent Republican Rebecca Kleefisch ran unopposed and will face John Lehman in November. Lehman, who lost in Iron County 206-188 to Mary Jo Walters, won the statewide contest 55-45 percent. Kleefisch garnered 228 votes in Iron County.

In the attorney general race, Susan Happ won the Democratic nomination with 53 percent of the vote in a three-way race. She received 243 votes in Iron County, defeating Jon Richards (118 votes) and Ismael Ozanne (29). Happ will face Republican Brad Schimel, who ran unopposed and received 210 votes in Iron County, in November.

For secretary of state, Republican Doug La Follette was unopposed and received 380 votes in Iron County. On the Democratic ticket, Julian Bradley defeated Garey Bies 63-37 percent statewide and 135-71 in Iron County 135-71. Constitution Party candidate Jerry Broitzman received one vote in Iron County.

In the state treasurer race, two Democrats and two Republicans battled. Democrat Dave Leeper defeated David Sartori 51-49 percent and 180-164 in Iron County. On the Republican ticket, Matt Adamczyk defeated Randall Melchert 61-39 percent and 141-62 in Iron County. Constitution Party member Andrew Zuelke received one vote in Iron County.
