'Souper Bowl Sundae' quilters mark 10 years

BRUCE CROSSING - Eight quilters were registered for Brambleberry's 10th Souper Bowl Sundae quilting retreat held at the Stannard Township hall on Sunday.

"2006 was our first one," said Vicki Kurtti, of Bruce Crossing, who owns Brambleberry. "We always have a tail gate party."

"And a prize for each quarter," added Deana Voigt.

The group plans a lot of their festivities using football terms, as the event takes place each year on the NFL's Super Bowl Sunday, usually the first Sunday in February. There's a bunch of food and drinks as well, like a typical football party.

This year there were only eight participants, but Kurtti said "The most we've ever had was 18."

Kurtti said this year's pattern, 'Hurry Home,' was created by Susan Fetter Ward of Common Bias Quilting in Bayfield, Wis.

Kurtti was designing hers with patriotic reds, whites and blues, and referred to it as her 'Quilt of Honor.'

Not everyone follows the same pattern, she said, but it's just a day to spend together eating, drinking, socializing and doing a hobby they love.

"It's just a lot of fun," Kurtti said.

The women do not get the whole quilt done in the day-long event, but she said most get the entire top completed.

Pat Franti, of Bruce Crossing, was creating a special quilt for her 7-year-old grand-daughter in shades of pink, yellow and black.
