Hurley — Parents and community members are invited to attend a Your Choice Parent Night presentation Monday evening, at the Hurley K-12 school, about the devastating effects of drugs and alcohol abuse on young people and their families.

Beginning at 6 p.m., Sandi Lybert and her son, Tyler, her daughter, Ashleigh Nowakowski, and her husband, Rick, will each talk about how drugs and alcohol abuse impacted their lives.

Tyler said he started drinking alcohol in the sixth grade and using drugs later on.

Tyler said he later became an addict and the effects had a negative impact on his family members.

“I was getting arrested and got expelled from school,” he said.

Sandi said she didn’t know what to do. She said Tyler’s addiction to drugs and alcohol devastated each member of the family.

Because of him, Tyler said his family argued more often, but they still loved him deep down. He said his family life was this way for about 10 years.

One day, Tyler said Sandi called him, saying he either stops abusing drugs and alcohol, or he will not be part of the family.

That moment changed Tyler’s life. “I realized I needed to change,” he said.

Since then, Tyler said his family is close and his life is a “million times better.”

Sandi said the presentation teaches parents and guardians how to detect signs of addiction on how deal with the problem. Attending parents will be shown a Your Choice toolbox, filled with drug paraphernalia and common household items used to make drugs that parents should be aware of.

Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team member Jason Geach will begin the presentation with information about drugs in the area.
