Mavis J. Wennersten

ASHLAND, Wis. - Mavis J. Wennersten, 79, of Pioneer Park Apartments, Ironwood, Mich., died peacefully Friday, April 29, 2016, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, with her family by her side.

The former Mavis Luoma was born March 16, 1937, in Bessemer Township, Mich., daughter of the late John and Jennie (Kivi) Luoma. She attended K.P. Silberg Grade School in Erwin Township, Ironwood, and graduated from Luther l. Wright High School in 1955. She was employed as a medical transcriptionist in Oklahoma City, Okla. for several years, prior to returning to Ironwood in 1978, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse at Grand View Hospital and in a nursing home in Ashland, eventually becoming a registered nurse. She then resided in Marquette, Mich. and worked at Mather Nursing Home in Ishpeming, Mich., retiring in 2000 and returning to Ironwood in 2013.

Mavis married David Wennersten on Aug. 31, 1955, and they had three sons. Mavis and David were divorced in 1990 and he preceded her in death in 2000.

Mavis had quite a green thumb and loved to grow plants in her apartment. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, movies, live theater, and going to Lake Superior.

Surviving are three sons, Michael (Chris), Burns Flat, Okla., Philip (Holly), Edmond, Okla., and Eric (Paula), Haltom City, Texas; nine grandchildren, Adam (Erin), Brian, Sara, Kailey, Tyler, Anna, Jack, David and Jacob Wennersten; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Emma; a brother, Melvin (Dolores "Dolly") Luoma, Ironwood; sisters-in-law, Kathy Luoma, June Luoma and Jan Trier, all of Ironwood, and Carol Kivi, Appleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Mavis was preceded in death by brothers, Clifford, Richard "Dick", Marvin and Donald Luoma; sisters-in-law, Barbara Luoma and Nancy Luoma; and brother-in-law, Tim Trier.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 4, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with Pastor Kurt Kovanen officiating.

Cremation will follow.

Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
