Bubbles fill Hurley Library

HURLEY - Children put on safety goggles and filled Hurley Public Library with bubbles Wednesday while learning about the science behind them.

When asked to describe bubbles, the children said bubbles can get really big, are clear and pop easily.

Licia Johnson, from the North Lakeland Discovery Center, asked the child scientists what bubbles are made of. "Soap and water," one child said.

Because bubbles contain water, Johnson said bubbles are a liquid. But she said bubbles also contain a gas. Thus, bubbles are gas inside a liquid.

Johnson said bubbles can be found in nature. She said bubbles form on ponds, lakes and rivers.

"You can see bubbles in water, but they last a few seconds then pop," she said.

In the winter, Johnson said water freezes. She said bubbles can form in ice.

"When you go home, take an ice cube out of the freezer, I bet you will find tiny little bubbles in there," she said.

Children put on goggles and made their own bubble recipe, using water, soap and glycerol. Using straws and bubble wands, children blew bubbles to fill the library's space.

The library will host a children's program about turtles on Wednesday, at 2 p.m.
