Jean A. Hautanen

IRONWOOD, Mich.- Our mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt and dear friend, Jean A. Hautanen, passed away on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, with her family by her side.

Jean was born on May 29, 1933, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Samuel L. and Laila S. (Jokinen) Goines. She attended A.L. Norrie Elementary School in Ironwood and graduated from Richmond Union High School in Richmond, Calif., in 1951.

On April 3, 1954, she was married to Jacob W. Hautanen. They were blessed with three children. Her life revolved around her family and friends. Jean loved to go on picnics and enjoyed camping and fishing. She always looked forward to berry picking with her dear friend, Helen Helgren, and sisters-in-law, Helen Luoma and Florence Hautanen, and was proud of her grandchildren for carrying on that tradition.

Jean enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed baking and canning. Jean was a very strong lady who never backed away from hard work. She helped make firewood and enjoyed it. Jean was always involved in a project of some kind and was always up for an adventure. She enjoyed traveling. All that knew her enjoyed her good nature, her smile and her laughter. She was great for telling stories from the past. She will be greatly missed by all those that knew her. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood.

During Jean's years of employment, she worked as a cook at the K.P. Silberg School in Erwin Township. After the closing of that school, she was then employed by Hurley Astronautics Corporation of America. From there she worked as a cook for the Ironwood Area Schools until her retirement.

She is survived by her son, Jacob G. Hautanen, Ironwood; daughter, Joy (Tom) Pelissero, Hastings, Minn .; five grandchildren, Megan Maki, Ironwood, Monica Maki, Jamaica Plain, Mass., and Nathan (Amanda) Madgziak, Alex Hautanen and Travis Hautanen, all of Ironwood; three great-grandchildren, Violet, Lucas and Jaxon who she felt especially blessed to have; a daughter-in-law, Wendy (Mickey) Backlund, Montreal; brother-in-law, Melvin (Dolly) Luoma, Ironwood; nephew, Mark W. (Ginny) Luoma, Springstead, Wis .; two nieces, Sue (Gregg) Raisanen, Alexandria, Minn., and Colleen (Kevin) Corcoran, Ishpeming; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephew.

Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband, Jack; and son, Jim.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Visitation will take place Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m., with memorial services at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with Pastor Kurt Kovanen officiating

Luncheon will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

Spring committal and interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Jean may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, 100 W. Midland Ave., Ironwood, MI 49938.
