Ironwood - While they are normally known for their inter-agency cooperation, the Gogebic Range's law enforcement departments squared off Friday in a chili cook-off fundraiser.

A total of nine competitors submitted dishes; including members of the Ironwood Public Safety Department, Gogebic County Sheriff's Department, Iron County Sheriff's Department, Hurley Police Department, Michigan State Police's Wakefield Post and county prosecutor's office.

Tasters could purchase tickets to vote for their favorites, according to Kristina Recla who organized the event.

The money raised will be donated to the Bowl for Kids fundraiser today to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Western Upper Peninsula.

Gogebic County Sheriff's Department Deputy Donald Cvengros took first place; Amber Renaud - representing the Wakefield Post and Big Brothers Big Sisters - took second; and Recla, MSP Community Service Trooper Jerry Mazurek and Gogebic County Sheriff Pete Matonich tied for third.

Recla was pleased with how the first contest went and said she planned to hold more in the future.

She also said she was considering expanding the contest to other agencies in the area.
