  • Midgets hand Broncos first loss

    Jason Juno|Oct 3, 2015

HARRIS – A three-hour bus ride nor the No. 3-ranked Division 8 team in the Upper Peninsula could stop the Hurley Midgets Friday night. Nothing really is stopping Hurley these days. The Midgets racked up 500 rushing yards on 54 carries and handed host Bark River-Harris its first loss of the season 52-34 Friday night. Hurley won its fourth straight game in the midst of a tough schedule, improved to 6-1 and secured an 18th straight trip to the WIAA postseason. "I thought offensively our kids w... Full story

  • Midgets turn shootout with Miners into blowout

    Jason Juno|Sep 26, 2015

HURLEY - Once defense arrived at Friday's game, it stole the show. The Hurley Midgets, buoyed by two third-quarter takeaways, shut out the Gogebic Miners in the second half for a 54-28 Great Western Conference victory. Gogebic recovered quickly from last week's humbling trip to Lake Linden and led the Midgets 28-27 at the half in a fast-paced shootout. But things quickly went Hurley's way after halftime. "We scuffled a bit in the first half. They were coming really quick downhill, in between... Full story

    Jason Juno|Sep 18, 2015

IRON RIVER, Wis. - The storms stayed away as the Hurley girls and Ironwood boys took second at the first Indianhead Conference cross country meet of the season at Northern Pines Golf Course Thursday. Officials ran the varsity races prior to the junior high races with storms expected, but only a light rain came and went. Washburn defeated Hurley 32-45 in the girls race with South Shore in third with 48 points. Both the Midgettes and Castle Guards had two runners in the top 10, but Washburn placed... Full story

  • Midgets sink in Lake Linden 35-6

    Jason Juno|Sep 8, 2015

LAKE LINDEN - The second quarter couldn't have gone much worse. But really, the whole day was one to forget for Hurley. Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated Hurley for a 35-6 Great Western Conference victory on a steamy Saturday afternoon. "Bottom line is they outplayed us today, big time," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. The Lakes took control early, scoring 11 first-quarter points off two long and impressive scoring drives where their offensive line took control. But that deficit appeared... Full story

  • Aukee nets hat trick in Devils' win

    Jason Juno|Sep 4, 2015

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Ironwood scored four unanswered goals to defeat Phelps 4-1 in Northern Lights Conference action. The Red Devils overcame a sluggish start as Phelps scored the game's first goal. Riley Jarocki tallied Ironwood's final goal late. The win puts Ironwood at 2-3 on the year. The Devils beat the Lakeland JV team 9-1 last month... Full story

  • Dominating decade: Midgets win 10th straight over Devils

    Jason Juno|Aug 29, 2015

HURLEY - Hurley's 10th straight victory over Ironwood Friday night was its biggest in the impressive run. The Midgets defeated Ironwood 55-6, the 49-point margin of victory eclipsing the 42-point defeats last year and in 2012. Hurley only needed six first downs thanks to short fields from 134 yards on five punt returns and a turnover. The Midgets scored on the first play of the drive twice and had three four-play drives. Every Midget drive started in Ironwood territory in the first half.... Full story

  • Lady Samsons start season Friday

    Jason Juno|Aug 27, 2015

IRONWOOD - The Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons start the volleyball season with a tournament at Vermilion at Friday and Saturday. Coach Aaron Bender just wishes more players were making the trip than the eight currently on the roster. But the Lady Samsons have a good group of setters and outside hitters to make up for that. "Numbers are down," he said. "It's frustrating. But at the same token, it is what is. These are the girls have committed and have shown their dedication to the game.... Full story

    Jason Juno|Aug 24, 2015

"I just played steady; I played pretty good golf all day," Langdon said. "My chipping and putting was not the best, but I just made a lot of pars and capitalized on the other person's mistakes. I just played steady. I didn't really play great, I didn't play bad, just steady golf." That was on a day with a... Full story

  • Ben Schneider wins 10th straight Paavo, wife Candice takes 5th title

    Jason Juno|Aug 10, 2015

HURLEY - Ben Schneider came into Saturday's race with a discrete, even human, bib number of 178, rather than the traditional No. 1 for the defending champion. Schneider, a nine-time defending champion coming in, maybe even felt a bit human just this once, battling an Achilles problem at Saturday's 47th annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon. It certainly didn't help the competition any, though. Schneider, 31, of Minneapolis, won the marathon in 2:42:30. Sure, it was his second-slowest Paavo winning time,... Full story

  • Midgets start football practice with high hopes for season

    Jason Juno|Aug 5, 2015

A couple of players weren't there Tuesday and the number of players is expected to hit approximately 40. • Longer games in Wisconsin may favor deeper teams

    Jason Juno|Jun 27, 2015

For one year at least, quarters are out in high school basketball games in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association board voted Thursday to change varsity games from four eight-minute quarters to two 18-minute halves for a one-year trial. JV teams will play two 16-minute halves. The move is expected to help deeper teams because games will be four minutes longer. Games should also have more flow with teams not able to stall for a last-second shot as often. Colleges, clubs and Minnesota high schools already play with halves.... Full story

  • Midgets perfect wing T offense with state championship coach

    Jason Juno|Jun 16, 2015

HURLEY - People who run the wing T offense stick together. Zeeland West coach John Shillito, who has won three Michigan High School Athletic Association state championships, came 9.5 hours to help Hurley fine tune its wing T offense. Hurley's version of the deceptive power offense has been doing pretty well on its own in recent years, but the Midgets' coaching staff saw an opportunity to get even better. "We asked him up here to let us have a chance to fine tune some things," Hurley coach Scott... Full story

Ironwood's Jake DiGiorgio led Northern Michigan with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Northern Michigan actually led 56-53 at the half and scored the first six points of the... Full story

That was the proud message Northern Wisconsin coach Kellen Anderson had for a group of five players coming out of the game in the first half with a 35-20 lead. Northern Wisconsin held on to beat Northern Michigan 76-68 in Tuesday night's Kiwanis Classic Border Bash all-star girls basketball game at Gogebic Community College's Lindquist Center. Jason Juno|Jun 4, 2015

The No. 2 seed Midgets lost a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal 7-3 to No. 3 Phillips in six innings Wednesday. No. 4 seed Hurley picked up a 6-4 upset of the top-seeded Screaming Eagles in Wednesday's WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal. Whether it was Tianne Kuula robbing Chequamegon's No. 4 hitter of a home run to center or pitcher Gabby Pecotte keeping them off-balance, the Screaming Eagles only scored four or fewer runs for the fourth tim... Full story

  • Tenlen wins playoff for conference title

    Jason Juno|May 13, 2015

HURLEY - A frustrating day of golf ended well for Hurley's Jeff Tenlen. Tenlen's 84 put him in a tie for the best score at Tuesday's Northern Wisconsin Golf Conference meet at Eagle Bluff. It also put him into a first-place tie with Chequamegon's Zach Carper for the overall conference medalist with a score 244 from the three conference meets. "I was surprised that I was still in contention at the end," Tenlen said. Tenlen became meet medalist over Carper by looking back on the card. He then... Full story
