Dorothy Ann (Kivisto) Treado

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Dorothy Ann (Kivisto) Treado passed away on Sept. 2, 2014, at her home in Gaithersburg.

Dorothy was born in Ironwood, Mich., on Jan. 9, 1926, to the late Esther (Mattila) Kivisto and Axel Kivisto.

She attended public schools in Ironwood, graduating from Luther L. Wright High School in 1944. During these years, she was a ballet dancer and very active in the local 4-H program, winning several awards for her dress making ability. She was awarded a 4-H scholarship to Michigan State University, but did not pursue it.

After graduation, Dorothy worked for the Allen Bradley Co. in Milwaukee, assembling electrical devices for the war effort. She later moved to Annapolis to be near her fiancee, Marshall Treado, where she worked for the DoD.

Dorothy and Marshall were married on June 2, 1950, in the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel and she started a lifetime of dedication to her family. In a variety of locations and during Marshall’s deployments to Korea and Vietnam, she performed all the duties of wife and mother, making each location a home to be remembered.

She was an avid seamstress who delighted in making clothes for her children. She started a garden in each place she lived and she used a home workshop to upholster and refinish furniture. Through the years, she served as class mother, made toys and other items for church bazaars, was a cub scout and 4H leader and sang in several church choirs, sometimes as a soloist.

Dorothy is survived by five children, Marcia Burlbaugh, Montgomery Village, Stephen Treado, State College, Pa., Gregory (Ashley) Treado, Lovettsville, Va., Karen (Thomas) Griffin, Silver Spring, and Kathleen (Maarten) Vermaat of Marquette, Mich .; eight grandchildren, Eric Treado, Marquette, Laura Deyo, Anna Stout, Barry Burlbaugh, Angelica Griffin, Jennifer Griffin, Nicolaas Vermaat and Axel Vermaat; several nieces and nephews, including Donna Mattson and Terri Randall, Ironwood, Mich .; a brother, Laurence Kivisto, Manistique, Mich .; and a sister, Kathleen Zielsdorf, Surprise, Ariz.

Dorothy was predeceased by Marshall Treado, her husband of 63 years.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme, Mich., followed by a social period at the Moose Drop Inn in Michigamme.
