    IRONWOOD - Spring really is on its way, and nothing shows it better than the blooming of flowers. If the winter weather ever subsides, the Downtown Ironwood Development Authority plans to hang flower baskets again this year in the downtown area near Memorial Day. With the installation of new lights and planting of trees last year, as well as improved parking, the flower baskets were like the "crowning touch" for a fresh downtown appeal, DIDA chairman Tom Williams said.   • Consolidation funding a possibility, not guarantee

    Proposed budgets by Gov. Rick Snyder may allow for consolidated schools to receive money if application deadlines are met, grant proposals are accepted and there is still money available. Bruce Mayle, superintendent of the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District, held a meeting Tuesday to inform the public on consolidation.   • Female giraffe born at Cincinnati Zoo, needs name

    CINCINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden says its new baby giraffe is a girl. The zoo says 7-year-old mother Tessa gave birth to her calf Monday morning. The event was featured live on Twitter. Mother and daughter will be visible through the viewing glass at Giraffe Ridge. It's Tessa's third calf in three years.   • Kolesar rated 'effective' as superintendent

    IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education performed it's annual evaluation on superintendent Tim Kolesar, during a special meeting Wednesday. According to board president Steve Thomas, the format used by the board calculates a total percentage from different aspects of the evaluation. The evalutation took place under closed session, and during open session it was revealed Kolesar was rated "effective" at 70.91 percent.     TRAVERSE CITY (AP) - Isle Royale National Park's inbred gray wolf population remains dangerously low for a third consecutive year, while the moose on which they feed have doubled during the same period - trends that could lead to long-term problems for the Lake Superior archipelago's ecosystems, scientists said Wednesday.     IRONWOOD, Mich. - Vivian A. Kleidon, 96, of Ironwood, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Ironwood. She was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Charles and Lempi (Hakko) Maki. Vivian attended Ironwood schools and graduated from the Luther L. Wright High School. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Quilters Club at the church. Vivian volunteered at nursing homes, enjoyed baking and made great gumdrop cake. She was married to Edmund H. Kleidon in Chicago on Aug. 2, 1941.... Full story

    MERCER, Wis. — Roselyn F. “Rosie” Brozzo, 70, of Mercer, died Monday, April 28, 2014, at home. She was born Nov. 25, 1943, in Wakefield, Mich., daughter of the late Bernard and Isabelle (Goodenow) Brozzo, and attended Marenisco, Mich., schools. She lived in Milwaukee and California prior to moving to Mercer in 1973, where she was employed at Simpson Electric up until the time of her death. Rosie was a former member of the Mercer Lioness. She was born Feb. 26, 1953, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Ralph and Doris (Gorski) Bodoh. Tudy was a graduate of the Luther L. Wright High School, class of 1971.
