  • Gogebic County tops 20 COVID deaths

    HANCOCK — More than 20 people in Gogebic County have died related to the coronavirus pandemic, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department reported Monday, as local health officials continue to work to limit the spread of the virus. There have been a total of 21 deaths in the county related to COVID-19 since the virus was first detected locally in March, according to the WUPHD’s Monday update, with a total of 51 deaths in the five-county region the health department serves.     TROUT CREEK, Mich. – Andrew "Andy" Aho, 64, of Trout Creek, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Nov. 21, 1956, in Flint, a son of Russell and Doris (Daly) Aho. On Feb. 16, 2002, Andy was united in marriage to Pamela at Trinity Lutheran Church in Trout Creek, where he was an active member. He retired from Flint Delphi East in 2007.     IRONWOOD, Mich. - Paulette Marie Kinnunen, 69, died unexpectedly and went to be with her Lord on Nov. 22, 2020, in Ironwood. She was a resident at the Westgate Living Center in Ironwood since 2010. Paulette was born May 26, 1951, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late Edwin and Bertha (Maki) Kinnunen. Paulette was one of nine children and attended Roosevelt School in Ironwood Township and the School for Exceptional Children in Wakefield.     HURLEY, Wis. - Vivian Fannie (Olkonen) Synkelma, 91, of Country Club Road in Ironwood Township, passed away unexpectedly due to COVID-19 on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020, at the Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley where she had resided for the past two years.
