  • Devils dominate Cardinals in opener

    Pat Krause|Dec 10, 2013

IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Red Devils put high school basketball teams on notice that they will be a force to be reckoned with this season with a 75-46 thumping of Wakefield-Marenisco in the season opener for both teams on Monday night. It was also an Indianhead Conference game for both schools. 'Ironwood is really a good team," Cardinal coach Terry Fetters said. "I said before I think they're the team to beat in the Indianhead Conference. They have height, depth, and move the ball well on...

  • Devils ground Cardinals in season opener

    Pat Krause|Dec 4, 2013

IRONWOOD — In the season-opener for both teams, a third-quarter surge lifted Ironwood to a 37-31 victory over Wakefield-Marenisco in an Indianhead Conference battle at the John Krznarich Gym on Tuesday night. With both teams seeming to have the first game jitters, the Cardinals opened up a 19-16 halftime advantage. The first two quarters (and the whole game) were not a thing of beauty. The basket seemed to have a lid on it as the Red Devils knocked down five of 28 shots (18 percent) and the Card...

  • Athens at Hurley

    Jason Juno|Oct 31, 2013

HURLEY - Come playoff time, Hurley is used to seeing teams with different styles – those that pass a lot (Pittsville, last year) or run the option (Spring Valley, last week). But that's not Athens, which typically passes the ball less than Hurley. "That's pretty uncommon, I guess," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. "I think it's the kind of game we like to play." No. 3 seed Athens (9-1) travels to No. 2 Hurley (9-1) for a 7 p.m. Friday WIAA Division 6 Level 2 playoff game. The Midgets have b...

  • Midgets rush past Spring Valley

    Jason Juno|Oct 26, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley found the best way to stop Spring Valley's offense in the second half: Keep it off the field. And Mark Saari cemented his piece in Hurley history during a 10-minute, second-half drive that kept the Midgets in control of the game. The No. 2 seeded Midgets' potent rushing attack — 65 carries for 443 yards — proved to be too much for the No. 7 Cardinals as Hurley won the WIAA Division 6 Level 1 playoff game 26-21 Friday. "Playoff football, you've got to be able to stop the run a...

  • Cardinals drop Speedgirls

    Pat Krause|Oct 11, 2013

BESSEMER — Playing with focused enthusiasm, the Wakefield-Marenisco volleyball team stunned Bessemer 25-22, 25-21 and 25-10 in a matchup of rivals in the House of Noise. Cardinal senior Miranda Sibley was a force at the net with 11 kills and four blocks and she said she had played in at least 10 games against Bessemer since coming up as a freshman and this was only the second time she could recall beating the Speedgirls. “We were all fired up in the locker room,” Sibley said. “I think we surp...

  • Pope blasts abortion after decrying focus on rules

    Sep 21, 2013

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis offered an olive branch of sorts to the doctrine-minded, conservative wing of the Catholic Church on Friday as he denounced abortions as a symptom of today’s “throw-away culture” and encouraged Catholic doctors to refuse to perform them. Francis issued a strong anti-abortion message and cited Vatican teaching on the need to defend the unborn during an audience with Catholic gynecologists. It came a day after he was quoted as blasting the church’s obsession with “small-minded rules” that are driving the f...

  • Speedgirls edge Cardinals in fifth set

    Pat Krause|Sep 10, 2013

WAKEFIELD — It’s not often that a good-sized crowd stands up at the end of a volleyball match and gives both teams a standing ovation. But that’s what happened at Cardinal Gym in Wakefield on Monday night as Bessemer eked out a razor-thin, five-set thriller over Wakefield-Marenisco 25-14, 25-23, 12-25, 22-25, and 17-15. The standing ovation seemed like a sign of appreciation of the intense emotion, hard work and all-out competition displayed by both teams. “One got a W, but nobody lost tonight,...

  • Midgettes pick up first win

    Sep 10, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley swept South Shore 25-19, 25-11, 27-25 Monday for its first win of the season. “I was happy with the way we served,” Hurley coach Liz Constantini said. “I thought that was much better than it’s been the first two games. But even more so, I was happy with the way we were passing and setting up with our hitters. Even though we only had 13 kills, we had a lot of good swings, a lot of good opportunities, so that’s a big improvement from last week.” The Cardinals made the Midgettes...

    Sep 6, 2013

HURLEY — Washburn swept Hurley 25-11, 25-12, 25-9 Thursday night in non-conference volleyball. Hurley’s Susan Walesewicz finished with two aces. She had nice serves and played well in the back row, Hurley coach Liz Constantini said. Bryce Holmes, Felicia Herlevi and Brittany Czarnecki all had one kill. Julia Nelson had an assist. “Obviously our offense was not working,” Constantini said. “Washburn served really well, which made it hard to get our offense going. We had a few opportuni...

  • Packers shut out by Cardinals

    Aug 10, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Stepfan Taylor aced his first test. Exactly what you expect from a Stanford kid. Taylor ran for 64 yards in his NFL debut, and the Arizona Cardinals exposed several trouble spots for the Green Bay Packers in a 17-0 preseason win Friday night. Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton each threw for a touchdown against a Packers secondary that had trouble containing anybody, and Arizona’s aggressive new defense had three sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. “You just try to...
