Ironwood wins Fall Quiz Bowl

IRONWOOD - The 17th annual Fall Quiz Bowl on the campus of Gogebic Community College on Thursday included 16 teams from Bessemer, Hurley, Ironwood, Wakefield-Marenisco and Watersmeet high schools in both varsity and junior varsity competition.

"A total of 40 games were held, with some very high scores," said Carl Vaara, Quiz Bowl organizer.

During the morning rounds of competition, Bessemer I and Ironwood I were victorious in the varsity divisions and faced off for the championship. Ironwood I emerged as the winner, 380-220.

Members of the Ironwood I championship team included team captain Zane Ozzello, Corissa Mattson, Ian Bentley and Rico Braucher. The team was coached by Steve Boyd.

In the junior varsity finals, Bessemer IV and Hurley II came out on top of the morning's brackets to meet in the final. Bessemer IV won the JV title, 245-100.

Members of the winning Bessemer IV team include Adam Mazurek, team captain Tad Rowe, Devon Byers and Abbey Johnson. Dave Rowe was the coach.

All teams played at least four games through the day.

"It was another fun and exciting day of scholastic competition on campus," said Vaara. "It is a wonderful opportunity for our area students to participate in good academic competition. All of the participants and their coaches should be congratulated."

Vaara, a retired GCC math instructor, coordinated the event, with assistance from Maria Sokol, a biology instructor and Phi Theta Kappa advisor at the college.

GCC hosts both fall and spring Quiz Bowl events annually for high school students.
