Ironwood - On Thursday evening, Bill Erickson took part in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month) at the Ironwood Carnegie Library by giving a presentation on the basics of writing.

There are several elements that make a story, said Erickson. If the story is missing any of them, then it's called an experiment, not a story.

First it must have a setting, then a time frame, a narrative form of which there are 11 to choose from, he said. Than it has to have conflict. If there's no conflict, there's no story, he said. Characters and plot round out the list. Plot consists of an introduction, a rising action, denouement and resolution, he said.

Of the eleven narratives to choose from, there is interior monologue. An example would be a character speaking to him or herself.

Dramatic monologue is when we "overhear" someone speaking out loud to another person.

Then there's letter narration, subjective narration, detached autobiography and so on. With every form, Erickson gave a book title that illustrated his examples.

During Nation Novel Writers Month, writers challenge themselves to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. The library is hosting writing nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays this month in an effort to promote the event and give writers a space to work in.
