Gogebic road limits to take effect
March 3, 2020
BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Road Commission announced Monday that spring weight restrictions will take effect for county roads as of noon Thursday.
A 5-ton limit will be enforced on all local county roads, according to the announcement, due to the minimal surface support and susceptibility of frost heave on the local roads — including the gravel roads.
On the primary county road system, the 35% reduction in axle loading required by Michigan’s frost laws will be in place. This allows trucks to remain at normal weight on the major routes through the county but reducing the load on normal roads, according to the announcement.
The road commission plans to monitor the frost action on the roads, and will remove the 5-ton restriction when conditions allow — reverting back to the 35% reduction for the remainder of the weight restricted season.
