Nona Lee Rooni

RAMSAY, Mich. - Nona Lee Rooni, 83, a longtime resident of Ramsay, enjoyed living with her son and daughter-in-law, David and Stacie Rooni, and their children in Wakefield, for the past year. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, with her loving family at her side.

Nona was born on June 22, 1940, in Baltic, Houghton County, Michigan, a daughter of Douglas Paul and Martha (Raty) Mattson.

On April 5, 1958, Nona was united in marriage to Melvin D. Rooni in Wakefield.

She was a faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included bowling, playing bingo and going to the casino.

Nona was employed at Munsingwear Inc., Ironwood Products and concluded her working career at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility.

After retiring, Nona took up quilting and made hundreds of beautiful quilts for Regional Hospice. She was a longtime member of the Northern Lights Quilting Guild and a founding member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church-Lutheran World Relief Quilters.

Nona is survived by four children, Nadine (Paul) Hewitt and Kurt Rooni, both of Ramsay, Peggy Rooni (Mike McNulty), Barron, Wisconsin, and David (Stacie) Rooni, Wakefield; six grandchildren, Bryan (Lisa) Hewitt, Kristin (Adam) Petrelius, Paul Rooni (Jessie Boggetto), and Jade, Lexis and Taavi Rooni; eight great-grandchildren, Niko, Nyah, Eli, Aly, Brooke, Austin (Samantha), Bryce and Annalise; a brother, John (Cheryl) Mattson, Dollar Bay, Michigan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin, on Nov. 4, 2013; and a sister, Sheila Mattson.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, E8223 Sanders Road, in Bessemer, with the Rev. Timothy J. Steckling officiating.

A luncheon will be served at the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Interment will take place at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer, in the spring.
