Robert G. 'Bob' Johnson

PASADENA, Texas — Robert G. “Bob” Johnson, 94, son of the late George H. and Sophia M. Johnson of Ironwood, Mich., passed away Feb. 13, 2016, in Pasadena.

Born in Ironwood on May 16, 1921, he attended Ironwood Township schools and graduated from Ironwood High School in 1939. In his youth, Bob worked on the family farm (Johnson Truck Farm and Nursery) and was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He also was an excellent skier and with his brothers and friends fashioned a ski jump out of scrap lumber on a hill adjacent to the farm. He also rode larger hills in the area including the Wolverine Ski Hill, where the record was 212 feet.

He served as a radio-operator on a sub-chaser in the U.S. Navy during World War II and on a mine-sweeper in the Korean confllict. After military service, he and Elaine Engstrom of Montreal, Wis., were married and moved to Pasadena, where he was employed by the Ethel Corporation and was a member of American Legion Post 521.

In Pasadena, he enjoyed sailing, dancing and being with family and friends. As a ham radio operator, Bob also had friends worldwide.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; sons, Christian and Peter Johnson; and a brother, LeRoy Johnson.

Surviving family include brothers James and Paul, and grandson, Michael Johnson.

Memorial Services were held Feb., 17, 2016, at Pasadena Funeral Chapel in Pasadena.
