Ironwood Carnegie Library kicks off National Novel Writing Month

IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Carnegie Library held its kick-off to National Novel Writing Month Thursday evening with local author Jodi Hughes.

Hughes, who writes under the name Auria Jourdain, has published three novels. Her most recent is "Spirit of the Northwoods."

"When I wrote my first book, I was just ecstatic to have my first book in my hand," she said.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) takes place each November. It began in 1999 and has since gained popularity, with 431,626 participants taking part in 2015 on six continents.

On Nov. 1, NaNoWriMO participants will begin writing. Throughout the next 39 days, they work toward the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30.

NaNoWriMo is "encouragement to write the novel," according to Hughes. It supports writers in taking that first step in writing a novel. The online community offers support for authors.

The Carnegie Library will hold meetings every Tuesday at 6 p.m. during November. Next week's topic will be, "Where Do I Start?"

There will be prize drawings throughout the month, including a Kindle fire as the grand prize.

Meetings are open to the public.
