    HANCOCK — New COVID-19 cases in the western Upper Peninsula continued to rise over the past seven days as Gogebic and Ontonagon counties moved from low to medium COVID-19 community levels, according to an update from the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department on Thursday.     BERGLAND, Mich - Chief Thomas Louis Paulman, 63, passed away on May 1, 2022, after a long battle with his medical conditions. Tom was born in Wakefield on Oct. 18, 1958, to Louis and Barbara Paulman. Tom served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1976 to 1980. He worked for many communities as water superintendent including Bergland and Trout Creek. Tom was the fire chief for the Bergland Volunteer Fire Department for 28-plus years, retiring in 2021.
