Iron County officials file election papers

HURLEY — With the passage of the June 1 filing deadline for candidates running in August’s partisan primary, it appears several county incumbents will be running for re-election unopposed — although a number of candidates have filed to run for Iron County’s district attorney office.

According to the Iron County Clerk’s office, Clerk Michael Saari and Register of Deeds Daniel Soine were both the only two file papers in their respective races.

With Treasurer Mark Beaupre filing papers saying he didn’t intend to seek re-election, Deputy Treasurer Clara Maki is seeking to replace him.

Even though Saari, Soine and Maki are the only ones running for their respective offices, Saari said they will still appear on the August primary ballot, as it is a necessary step to qualify for November’s general election ballot.

Saari said all three filed as Democrats.

According to information from the state’s Government Accountability Board; Anthony Stella of Hurley, Matthew Tingstad of Bessemer and Elaine Erickson of Ironwood, have filed papers to replace Martin Lipske as Iron County’s district attorney.

According to the GAB’s information, Stella and Erickson have filed as Democrats, while Tingstad is running as a Republican.

Iron County voters will also cast their votes in a number of other state races.

According to the GAB’s website, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson is running for re-election in the Republican primary. He will face the winner of the Democratic race between former senator Russ Feingold and Scott Harbach, of Kenosha. Phillip Anderson, of Fitchburg, has also filed papers to run for Senate as a Libertarian.

Sean Duffy is running to keep his U.S. House seat, representing Wisconsin’s 7th District.

Duffy will face Superior’s Donald Raihala in the Republican primary. The Democratic primary for the seat will feature Mary Hoeft, of Rice Lake, against Joel Lewis, of Wausau. Robert Burke, of Hudson, is running as a Libertarian.

Democrat Beth Meyers is the only candidate to successfully file papers to win her seat representing the 74th District in the Wisconsin State Assembly, according to the GAB’s website.
